1867: Early settelment

Ackley family homestead
Ackley homestead and family residences, 1867

Elizabeth still was alive at the time this map was drawn, but Lot had died. Arthur is living on the homestead. By 1867, Arthur had married the daughter of B. Mattison (Burton), Sophia, who died in 1854.  A. Matteson on this map is Burton’s nephew, my father’s great grandfather.

Lot’s sons John and Andrew (who uses the name Thomas) live a short distance away from the homestead. That section of Hogsback Rd no longer exists; it was abandoned in the 1950s or 1960s. Mary Ackley Lyman, one of the first babies born in Sand Bank, in 1814, also lived nearby on this map.

Today, New Centreville is called Centerville, but only by the old-time locals who remember the name. Salmon River is called Pineville. Neither has a post office today. Sand Bank was renamed Altmar in 1895.

The area just above Sand Bank, on the right, shows land owned by Hendersons. This is where Peter Henderson bought land before/after he arrived in 1813.

The arrows do not precisely pinpoint the locations, but indicate the general area to show distance from one to the other. Town names in italics are smallest in population; those in all caps are the largest. Source: Burr, 1839  https://www.loc.gov/item/98688518/
