Other families in my lineage

The three Ackley books are the most recent in the series of about my direct-line ancestry. Two others are available, as noted below.

Discovering the Ancestry and Descendants of William Ellis (1842–1924) in Sussex, England and Oswego County, NY

This 2023 volume combines two separate books on the Ellises and the Burtons.

The Ellis family history begins with the ancestry and families of Alfred Ellis, who arrived from Burwash, Sussex, England in 1850 and settled initially in Oriskany Falls, NY. Organized chronologically, it sets the experiences of the Ellises in the context of their times. Photos and family stories offer insights into Alfred Ellis’s son William (known as “Will”) and wife Mary Elizabeth Burton (known as “Liz”), who lived the second half of their lives in Albion Center in Oswego County, NY. A short section adds brief information about and photos of the Ellis children: Alfred Ellis (Nellie Pickens), Almeda (Romain) Adams, Mary (Charles) Beeman, Alta (Benjamin) Rowell, and Ruth (Arthur) Ackley.

The second half of the lineage is the Burtons and the Hugheses in the US, families that left Kent County, England between 1849 and 1852 to make a new start 3,700 miles away in Oneida and Madison counties in New York state. The genealogy includes not just names and dates, but also a number of old family photographs. The story of both families is set in the context of their times to help understand what their lives really were like. The book includes a table of the descendants of Richard Burton and Mary Elizabeth Hughes Burton, his wife.

Mattison Obrist Genealogy

Written in a different style than the other books, this traces the complete lineage of the Matte(i)son ancestors from the mid-1400s in England and Wales down 15 generations to the children of George and Anna Obrist Mattison. It includes the lineage of both the Obrists, who arrived in 1881 in New York state from Schinznach Dorf, Aargau canton, Switzerland and the Mattesons who arrived in Rhode Island in 1667 from England. Vignettes about the lives of the more recent generations are included.
